"All
Things Must Pass: A Tribute to George Harrison"

He wasn't the center of attention. He wasn't a lot of people's favorite Beatle. As a
member of a band driven by the prolific genius of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, on
Beatle albums, he usually received only one or two gratuitous spots for his own musical
compositions, and yet George Harrison leaves behind a legacy that transcends his early
designation as 'The Quiet One'.
Name almost any Beatle song, and the lead guitar hook that burns itself into your soul is
the work of his gifted fingers. Go to an All Star, Rock N' Roll benefit concert today, and
it's because it was George who first thought to assemble a fraternal gathering of
musicians for a charitable cause with his Concert for Bangladesh. And hear his longtime
friend, Gavin De Becker, as he announced George's passing, say that "He died with one
thought in mind...love one another", and then you will truly know that this is a man
who didn't receive his fulfillment from 'The Material World', who loathed Beatlemania, and
who, despite his forty years in the spotlight, always seemed uncomfortable with his
celebrity, yet still strove to use his fame to imporve the quality of life for others on
this planet.
He was a seeker of spirituality, found comfort and solace in Krishna, Vishnu, and
meditation, and he lived his life as a quest to answer the three great metaphysical
questions: 'Who am I?', 'Why am I here?', and 'Where am I going?'
Who he was...was George Harrison.
He was here to bring the world the gift of his music, to entertain us, to move us, to make
us cry, to make us smile... to make us dance.
He was here to inspire us to fight against the injustices of hunger and human suffering.
Where is he going? I'm not sure. But he was.
De Becker said George left this world as he lived in it, conscious of God, fearless of
death, and at peace. John Lennon was taken from us by an act of senseless violence. As
George leaves this world, it's at the hand of sadly inevitable, simple, human frailty.
But as George himself wrote : "Life goes on within you, and without you."
The Lord is awaiting on us all.
But darkness only stays at night time. In the morning, it will fade away. Daylight is good
at arriving at the right time. It's not always going to be this grey. All things must
pass. All things must pass away.
Here comes the sun.
And I say...
It's alright." |
